While I consider myself a huge Apple fan, I’m not one of those snooty, latte-sipping Jobs disciples found lounging about the local Apple store as if it were their private nerd-oasis.
I’m always looking for a good deal, and being an Apple fan does not make me too elite to do most anything for a free Mac; even if it requires digging through the trash.
That situation presented itself a few weeks ago as I was driving past my neighbors home only to find a shiny PowerMac G3 (the Apple desktop from ‘97-’98 with a translucent case, lovely blue accents, gaudy handles, and the “hockey puck” mouse) sitting on the curb with the trash. Of course I immediately placed my shiny new toy in the car and continued to dig through the trash until I found the accompanying power cord. I brought it home, plugged it in, and crossed my fingers as I pressed the power button.
To my pleasant surprise, it powered up quickly and smoothly. Unfortunately, OS 8.5 was still installed. I quickly became bored tinkering around with the ancient (by today’s standards) operating system, so I installed a fresh copy of OSX Tiger out of curiosity, assuming it would run like Windows Vista on a TI-83 calculator ( i.e. slow as hell).
Shockingly, the PowerMac G3 ran almost as smoothly as my brand new Intel Macbook in basic tasks. After this revelation, I went on eBay and purchased 512mb of old Mac ram for $30. Once installed, my little PowerMac was humming along, running multiple applications smoothly. The only thing that caused it to hiccup were HD QuickTime movies (certainly forgivable from a 10 year old system).
It really is remarkable how well OSX runs on old Mac hardware, and it’s a true testament to Apple’s un-bloated, slick OS. Can you imagine Windows Vista running smoothly on the decade-old Dell or Compaq collecting dust in your grandmas’ basement? I think not.
Anyone who has recently taken the plunge and switched over to the Mac side of life can take a considerable sigh of relief knowing that in 2017, they will most likely be able to go to their local Apple store, pick up the latest Mac OS and have it up and running smoothly on their current hardware. Let’s see a PC do that!
Fans are really screaming when Disney’s latest film entitled “Camp Rock” was launched. Mostly are yelling to Nick, Joe, and Kevin popularly known as the Jonas Brothers. But there is also one pal actress that is truly receiving tribute for the project – the awesome Demi Lovato.
In the making, Demi brag remarkable credentials in both television and radios. Demi is proficient musician: a great drummer, guitarist, and pianist and gifted with a golden voice. She was also then a popular star on different online videos like YouTube.
At the age of six, Demi started her acting performance with the lilac dinosaur Barney. She also played a short stint on “Prison Break” produced by Fox’s. She also got a very fine role in Disney’s “As the Bell Rings” which narrated a high school life.
When she auditioned for “Camp Rock”, she didn’t have an idea who would be her co-stars are. In fact it was the biggest tween sensations and she got her biggest break there.
Demi didn’t even have an idea that the popular heartthrob The Jonas Brothers were going to be in that movie until she also got it.
The brothers were really staggering to work with according to Demi.
The film stars Lovato as Mitchie, a talented teen who dreams of going to a summer music camp, but her family is strapped for cash. However, after her mother lands a gig cooking for the camp, Mitchie is in. That kicks off a “Cinderella”-like tale involving a rock star and mean fellow campers.
“What’s so interesting about her is this was absolutely her journey,” the president for entertainment at Disney Channels Worldwide, said of Lovato. “She was going through this same evolution as a human being at the same time as the character. When she sings ‘This Is Me’ in the end, this is just not Mitchie, this is Demi telling the world ‘This is me.’ This was literally her journey coming forward.”
Demi is still adjusting to her pristine recognition and figure out on how to handle screaming fans holding her placards when she’s in public.
Demi welcomes her new life on the spotlight unlike many other teenage celebrities who usually complains. She said she work really hard for what and where she is right now. “There were lot of sacrifices I made that should be really taken good care of and I love what I do” she said.
Her good friends the Jonas Brothers, have also written songs for her debut album and Demi was really thankful and considers them true friends in show business.
July of 2008 everything changed for Demi, she hits the records with Joe of the Jonas Brothers became America’s newest sweethearts. They were seen doing some duets on stage then after.
At this moment, Demi is at the end of the beginning of her introduction to stardom. She’s a Disney lass contracted to Mickey and Goofy. She is already on the way to make movies with Disney’s and a lot of lined-up projects that people shouldn’t miss.
Teen entertainment editors captured Demi’s absolute power in singing and in the music industry as a whole. She got the talent. She has the whole package. She has the talent and has this great personality that a true star is finally born and emerging.

I wonder how many people in this country of ours can actually answer that question by looking on a map.
I wonder how many people in this country of ours can actually answer that question by looking on a map. I know, many of you are saying America is a large country situated on the North American continent between Canada and Mexico with Alaska being a large chunk of land situated north of the rest of the country on the western side of Canada and Hawaii a small chain of islands situated in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. But that’s not all America is. America is far more than just a physical place, a land where some three hundred million people live, work, play and die. America is an idea. It is the idea that people can live out their lives while enjoying freedom and liberty. It is the idea that I know what’s best for me and you know what’s best for you. It is the idea that one can live however one pleases so long as he does not harm another. It is the idea that one can go about one’s business of living without government interference or mandates. I wish to know where this America is, for in today’s world such a place does not exist. Every day I have to live with the threat of government putting its hand in my affairs. Whether it be that I am forced to buckle my seatbelt to drive my car, that I won’t be able to light up as I sit at the bar enjoying a beverage, that I am forced to give a portion of my money to some faceless bureaucrat so he can redistribute it, or that I have to be extremely careful about who I associate with on the Internet, the government attempts to pry into every aspect of modern life. This is not America. At least, it’s not the America I learned about as a child. Where is America?
This country that we live in has become corrupt to the core. Corruption, like a cancer, grows and metastasizes as its tendrils reach into every system and subsystem of the body politic. Soon, the whole entity is sick with it. It begins to permeate not only government, but the foundations society is built upon. It begins to seem as though corruption is the norm rather than the exception. It gets to the point where it seems the only way to get ahead is to become corrupt, become part of the cancer. An honest business man hardly stands a chance as the government regulates him into bankruptcy. An honest worker finds himself drowning in debt as the government taxes his earnings to the point where he can’t pay his bills. Yet government continues to grow, continues to spend the money we haven’t even earned yet, and as the government grows, so does corruption. Soon, the only businesses left are those with government contracts, those with government connections, those that have donated to the campaigns of elected officials. Soon, the only jobs available are government jobs, or jobs tied to the government. The system morphs into one of state owned means rather than private enterprise. This is not America. We need fewer regulations, not more.
The country we live in has become arrogant and belligerent. Our government has carried out wars of aggression against other nations. Our government has invaded and occupied countries which no longer welcome us. Our government seems to feel obliged to force our way of life on other peoples. Our government now rules the people of this nation by fear. We are told to fear the next terrorist attack. We are told to fear weapons of mass destruction. We are told to fear a dirty bomb. We are told to fear the Muslim, or the Arab, or the man with the funny accent. This fear is used as an excuse for the government to spy on its people. Dissent is squelched. Questions are frowned upon. Those that ask questions and chose to dissent are criticized, ostracized and even threatened with imprisonment. And so the fear perpetuates itself. We now fear the government. Soon, we will fear each other. Already, we have begun to spy on one another. More and more the society resembles a police state much like that of Hitler’s Germany. This is not America. We need to be the peace makers, not the warriors. We need to be friendly to our neighbors, not suspicious of them. We need less government and fewer laws, not more.
The other night I was listening to a radio talk show called Free Talk Live. Actually, I’ve been listening to the show for quite some time now. It’s hosted by a couple of young gentlemen who espouse the virtues of libertarianism. It’s a show I wish I had thought of and been able to do twenty years ago, but I guess everything comes to be in its own time. This show has a powerful message of hope, for if we all pay attention to its message and act upon it, America may yet be America again. Anyway, the other day when I was listening, one of the hosts said something very interesting. He made the claim that being libertarian meant more than just belonging to a political party, it was a way life. I thought about this, and decided he was right.
This is where America is. It lives in the hearts and minds of those who practice libertarianism. It breathes in those who believe in the rights of the individual and personal responsibility. Its spirit lives on in those who understand tyranny and speak out against it, though the majority may be in favor of it. Being Libertarian is being American. It is respecting the rights of others to make up their own minds, to take care of their own business, to recreate in their own way and to live their own lives. America is not just a place, it’s a way of life. America is still here despite all the attempts of the president and congress to legislate it into the dustbin of history. Freedom and liberty are powerful ideas that, once planted in the hearts and minds of the populace, are hard to kill. If we give these ideas a little water, if we pay just a little bit of attention to them, they will grow and spread like wild flowers in our garden. Then we can have hope for our future. Then we can find America in this place once again.

In the American culture, drinking alcohol is a common occurrence. During celebrations of birthdays, job advancement, a new baby, marriage and so many other special moments in time, champagne or another alcoholic beverage is toasted to punctuate the event and show a sense of joy. As well, Friday “happy hour” is a common occurrence in many offices and places of employment. Unfortunately, for some, what happens is Friday happy hour ends up becoming part of the entire week and before you know it, every day you are drinking. Eventually, this seemingly harmless “social drinking” becomes an addiction with your body craving alcohol. Most people, in the beginning, shrug this off as just a phase. Soon, it changes your personality, your job function and every area of your life for the worse. Yes, at this point, alcohol rehabilitation is necessary.
Unlike the need for drug treatment, alcohol rehabilitation is, unfortunately, often times more difficult for people to realize they need treatment. The reason is that alcohol is legal and an accepted pastime. The problem is that this innocent social drinking can and does turn into alcohol abuse when it becomes the focus of your life. Those that need alcohol rehabilitation many times are reluctant to attend events that aren’t serving alcohol. After work, the Friday happy hour turns into a daily regimen with it becoming more important to you than getting home to your loved ones. Again, unlike the need for drug treatment, most of these alcohol abusers never believe they have a problem and therefore will not seek alcohol rehabilitation.
Unfortunately, there are common myths regarding this disease which prohibit individuals from getting alcohol rehabilitation. Myth: “I don’t abuse alcohol…I don’t even drink hard liquor…only wine and beer.” The fact of the matter is that wine and beer can create a dependency just a hard liquor can; again, disguising the need for alcohol rehabilitation. Myth: “Alcohol isn’t a drug, so I can’t get hooked on it like drug abusers.” The truth is that alcohol “is” a drug and can be as long term and deadly as any illegal drug on the market. Drug addiction recovery for the drug addict is the same as alcohol rehabilitation for the alcohol abuser. Only difference is their drug of choice. There are many more myths but those are two of the most popular. There is a way out of this downward spiral through alcohol rehabilitation in a treatment center that understands this disease and specializes in alcohol and drug addiction recovery.

The National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) applauded Mazda’s decision to scrap all vehicles on board the Cougar Ace. It also decided to disclose vehicle identification numbers (VINs) of the Mazdas on board.
It can be recalled that Cougar was nearly capsized due to a ballast tank problem. During the incident, the vessel was carrying 4, 703 Mazdas. Though most of the vehicles were not affected, Mazda still decided to scrap all the vehicles on board. This is to ensure quality and safety of the vehicles.
Cougar Ace vessel was en route from Asia to North America. However, it nearly capsized off the Aleutian Islands in late July. It sat listing at more than 60 degrees for nearly a month then it was towed to the nearest port in Portland, Oregon for the necessary repairs.
Critics in the industry, consumers can’t help but entertain doubts whether the Mazda they will be purchasing is safe. They also added that the decision of the automaker not to sell the vehicles on board must have been difficult to make. Sixty percent of Mazda vessels from Cougar Ace are CX-7s hence; per unit has an estimated amount of $22,000. Analysts estimate Mazda’s loss at $103 million. Moreover, they suggest that Mazda would just donate the vehicles to charities and non-profit organizations.
“Even though little visible damage existed on some of the vehicles, Mazda put the customer first and made the right decision to scrap 100 percent of the vehicles because of potential safety concerns.” said David Regan, VP of Legislative Affairs with NADA. “This is clear example of good corporate citizenship.”
Mazda’s decision is anchored on its devotion to secure safety and quality of its vehicles. The automaker ensures that Mazda car accessories and parts are excellent. “Mazda has been an ardent supporter of ensuring that insurance companies disclose the VINs so that consumers and dealers have the information they need to make an educated decision on the value and safety of vehicles,” Regan added referring to Mazda’s support of total-loss disclosure legislation. “By publicly disclosing the VINs of the questionable vehicles and then choosing to scrap them all together, they show how committed they are to the health and well-being of their customers.”
Japanese automaker Subaru recently celebrated two environmental milestones. The first one is the third anniversary of the Subaru of Indiana Automotive as a zero landfill facility. The other milestone celebrated by Subaru is the sale of the 100,000th Partial Zero Emissions vehicle.
The two milestones show the concern of the company for the environment. Aside from providing quality vehicles to their consumers in the United States and other countries, the company is also one of the numerous car manufacturers taking steps to protect the environment.
“We are pleased to mark these milestones,” said Tomohiko Ikeda, the Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Subaru of America. “At Subaru, we are committed to not only maintain an effective environmental management system, but also to integrate sound environmental practices throughout our business.”
The Japanese company joins other companies such as Ford in taking steps to protect the environment. Ford has also taken steps to make their assembly facilities environment friendly. The Japanese carmaker Nissan is also one that uses alternative power solutions to protect the environment.
According to Subaru, their assembly facility in Indiana sends no waste to a landfill. The said facility is the first auto assembly plant in the United States to achieve the zero landfill status. The wastes created in the Subaru Indiana plant are all reused, recycled or are sued as raw materials to provide electricity for the city of Indianapolis.
Aside from those steps taken by Subaru to take care of their waste problems, the Japanese carmaking company also uses the Indiana plant grounds as a sanctuary for animals. According to the company, the said assembly facility is a designated backyard wildlife habitat. Animals who make the grounds of the plant their homes includes deer, coyotes, beavers, blue herons, geese, rabbits, squirrels, meadowlarks, ducks and others.
These steps being taken by Subaru in making their facility in Indiana an environment friendly one has already been recognized by the government. Last year, the Japanese car manufacturer received the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Gold Achievement Award for the effectiveness of the company’s WasteWise program. The said program is aimed at reducing waste in the work area and improves recycling of wastes.
The materials used by the car manufacturer in assembling vehicles can be used again by recycling it. Metals can be sent to a foundry which then can be melted and used to manufacture stock or Subaru aftermarket parts. This recycling of waste reduces the amount of garbage thrown into landfills which are proven to be a hazard for the environment.
Aside from the zero landfill status achieved by Subaru in its Indiana plant, the company also produces PZEV or Partial Zero Emission Vehicles. The Subaru Legacy, Outback, and the Forester are given the said classification by the government. The three Subaru nameplates have achieved the status in all states of the country including California which is known for its very strict emission regulations.
The 100,000th PZEV was recently sold by Subaru. These vehicles are considered the cleanest gasoline engine vehicles in production. The certification of being a PZEV is only given to vehicles which are found out to produce very little greenhouse gas and other potentially hazardous emissions. Subaru uses advanced emission filtration technology and other engine technologies to enable their vehicles to achieve the PZEV classification.
Super Hurricane Rita is roaring for the Texas Gulf Coast at a clip of 10-13 mph and carrying winds of 125 mph. With it comes a storm 410 miles across and potentially ten inches of rain. some forecasters believe that the East side of Houston will be flooded and I-10 submerged before the eye even crosses the shoreline, although since the storm is a little East that probably will not occur, but I-10 will be closed for sure in places. As the Super Cat Five Hurricane moves onto land it will wind down to Cat Three and is likely to bring with her a storm surge of 15-20 feet high, that is over the seawall height at Galveston, so it is good thing they will dodge the bullet this time around. As this water surges into the Houston Ports Channel, it will rise even further like a giant little title wave taking out anything in its way, although officials will makes sure there is nothing in the channel at the time, as there will be nowhere to run and nowhere to hide.
If you will remember Tropical Storm Allison and it deluge on Houston you will begin to see the problem. Now add in Storm Surge and possible Category III, IV or V winds, there is no city in the United States that is that tough. Currently Super Hurricane Rita has winds of 175 mph and the center has a low pressure of 897 mb, making it the third largest storm in US History.
There are no Hotel Rooms in Texas anymore and most of the Hotel Rooms in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and a good part of Florida are all filled up from evacuees of both Hurricane Katrina and Rita.
What we have now in Houston is a problem, think about it.
